"Feared the presence of the LORD"

Text: Haggai 1:12

THE MINISTRY OF HAGGAI

There were ministers of the LORD among the remnant. The established leaders were Zerubbabel and Joshua the high priest. Haggai’s ministry was that of a prophet.

“…Obeyed the voice of the LORD their God,
and the words of Haggai the prophet,
as the LORD their God had sent him;
and the people feared the presence of the LORD.”
Haggai 1:12

1. “Obeyed the voice of the LORD their God”

a) God did not actually speak to the remnant as He did at Mount Sinai (Exodus 19-20).
b) Nevertheless, it was true that the LORD spoke to the remnant.

2. “The words of Haggai the prophet”

a) The voice of the LORD was made known through Haggai the prophet.
b) All prophets were given messages from the LORD.
c) The words of Haggai the prophet:

i) The remnant recognized the voice of God in Haggai’s preaching/ teaching.

ii) They sought to respond to the things that had been proclaimed to them.

3. “As the LORD their God had sent him”

a) The remnant had learned to recognize the authority of Haggai the prophet.
b) They had recognized that Haggai had indeed been sent to them by the LORD.
c) Haggai represented the LORD as His spokesman.

4. “And the people feared the presence of the LORD”

a) This is essentially a “reverence” of the LORD.
b) This fear of the LORD:
i) Good and wise.
ii) Healthy and wholesome.
iii) It resulted in obedience to God’s commands.

THE LACK OF THE FEAR OF GOD

1. This occurs when there is little true knowledge of God.

2. The sinfulness of the heart affects the fear of the Lord very much.

3. The lack of fear of the LORD would lead a person to walk in disobedience and in wickedness.
