"Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass..."

Text: Galatians 6:1a

LOOKING OUT FOR EACH OTHER

Life is always complex. There are many twists and turns in life. Even when one comes to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the problems in life do not cease to emerge. The apostle Paul gave this challenge to the Galatians. This challenge is also relevant to us today.

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass,
you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness,
considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:1-2

1. “Brethren”

a) Paul has used this word many times now.
b) He continues to relate to the Galatians closely.

2. “If a man is overtaken in any trespass”

a) This may refer to sin in general.
b) It may even refer to those who were deceived by the false teachers.
c) Sin can overcome a person because the individual may be weak.

3. “You who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness”

a) There would be some who are weak and thus they succumb to sins.
b) There are those who are spiritual and they are quite strong.
c) Those who are spiritually stronger should seek to restore those who are overcome by sin.
i) Restoration should be foremost in the mind.
ii) If there is repentance then restoration is possible indeed.
d) Manner of ministry
i) Gentleness should be exercised.
ii) The spirit of being “brethren” should prevail.

4. “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ”

a) If there is a law to be obeyed, it is this “law of Christ”.
b) Jesus would want His brethren to restore each other in the faith.
c) The work of restoration involves bearing each other’s burdens.
d) The law of Christ is not just a creed nor ritualism, but a gentle caring for each other.
