Day 99

"And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh..."

Text: Galatians 5:24a

WHAT A GLORY TO BELONG TO CHRIST

The apostle Paul revelled in the glory of belonging to the Lord Jesus Christ. The fruit of the Spirit would be reason enough to rejoice greatly in the salvation Christ provides.

And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh
with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit,
let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited,
provoking one another, envying one another.

Galatians 5:24-26

1. “Those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh”

a) “Those who are Christ’s”
i) They have believed in Christ as their Saviour.
ii) They now belong to Christ and His kingdom.
iii) They are the sons of God and are joint-heirs with Christ.
b) “Have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires”
i) This was what Paul wrote earlier in Galatians 2:20.
ii) They have chosen to be identified with Christ in His death.
iii) They are dead to the desires of the world and the flesh.

2. “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit”

a) True faith in Christ results in the gift of the Holy Spirit.
b) He resides in the heart of the believer as God’s Seal and Guarantee.
c) The life-force of the believer comes from the Spirit of God.
d) The challenge now would be to walk in tandem with the Spirit and His leading.

3. “Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another”

a) Conceit, provocation, envy… these are also works of the flesh.
b) The teachings of the Judaizers tended to fuel these terrible inclinations.
c) These things should be resisted in every way possible.
d) These must be rejected as not of the Spirit of God but of the flesh.
e) These sins are not to be taken lightly for they have devastating impact on the soul.
f) The only effective way to deal with sin is to repent from them and the power of God sought and found in the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
