"You will become a horror"

Text: Ezekiel 27:36

A LESSON OF HORROR

The fall of Tyre was nothing less than spectacular. It was once a very powerful city-state, admired by all. Many nations were enriched because of their trade links with Tyre. The sudden demise of Tyre shocked many nations.

“All the inhabitants of the isles will be astonished at you;
Their kings will be greatly afraid,
And their countenance will be troubled.
The merchants among the peoples will hiss at you;
You will become a horror, and be no more forever.”
Ezekiel 27:35-36

1. The demise of Tyre.

a) All the different people from many isles were astonished.

b) Kings of different countries felt fear when they thought about the demise of Tyre.

c) Their countenance was troubled.

d) They could not fathom how Tyre could have been destroyed so suddenly.

2. The merchants.

a) The trading partners were the ones affected most badly affected.

b) Their thoughts would take a turn for the worse when they considered their great losses.

c) They would move away from lamentation to “hissing”.

i) They would be angry for their losses.

ii) They would blame Tyre for their economic woes.

iii) They would become nasty in their attitude towards Tyre.

iv) Hostility would be felt intensely for great were their losses.

3. The death knell of Tyre.

a) Tyre was destroyed forever.

b) It would never become a world-power again.

c) Tyre would be a “horror-story” to many.

d) The rise and fall of the city-state of Tyre would be a humbling “story” that would be told far and wide.

e) Tyre as a mighty maritime nation would cease forever!
