"I sit in the seat of gods"

Text: Ezekiel 28:1

A WORD FROM THE LORD

Ezekiel was a special prophet of God. He lived at the time when Tyre was a mighty maritime nation. But God gave him a word of prophecy that foretold the demise and destruction of the city state. The Lord gave to Ezekiel another powerful word to be delivered to the ruler of Tyre.

“The word of the Lord came to me again, saying,
‘Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre,
‘Thus says the Lord God:
‘Because your heart is lifted up,
And you say, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of gods,
In the midst of the seas,’
Yet you are a man, and not a god,
Though you set your heart as the heart of a god.”'”
Ezekiel 28:1-2

1. A direct word from God.

b) To God, he was nothing more than “a prince”.

b) God knew how this prince was boasting about himself:

i) “I am a god”

ii) “I sit in the seat of gods in the midst of the seas”

c) These were the two arrogant boasts that the prince of Tyre proclaimed arrogantly.

4. God’s firm response.

a) God denies this proclamation.

b) The prince of Tyre is not a god.

c) He is a mortal man though he sets his heart to be a god.

d) He would perish in the seas that he believed he can control.
