"The Spirit of wisdom and understanding..."

Text: Isaiah 11:2

A CLOSER LOOK

Let us take a closer look at what it means for the Lord Jesus to be given the Spirit of God for life and ministry. John offered this insight.

“For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God,
for God does not give the Spirit by measure.”
John 3:34

1. “He whom God has sent”

a) This is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) He was sent by God.
i) To teach the word of God.
ii) To proclaim the word concerning the Kingdom of heaven.
iii) He spoke the very “words of God”.
iv) John in fact called Jesus “the Word” (John 1:2).

2. Every servant of God

a) Each servant of God is given the anointing of the Spirit.
b) However, each servant is somehow limited.
c) The seven-fold measure is given to no servant of God.

3. “For God does not give the Spirit by measure”

a) The “Sevenfold Spirit” is a figure of speech.
b) It means that God gave the Holy Spirit without measure to the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ.
c) The work of the Messiah would require the filling and empowering of the Spirit of God.
d) The work of the Spirit of God is very evident when we study the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus.

4. The seven-fold Spirit in the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ

a) The Spirit of God in all His glory and power will be given to the Lord Jesus.
b) The Spirit of wisdom will fill His mind.
c) The Spirit of understanding will be His as well.
d) The Spirit of counsel will be seen in the way He gave counsel.
e) The Spirit of might that Jesus displayed astonished all who saw Him perform miracles (Mark 1:27).
f) The Spirit of knowledge was evident by the way Jesus taught (Matthew 7:28-29).
g) The Spirit of the fear of the Lord saw Jesus seeking to glory His Father always (John 17:4-5).
