"The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him..."

Text: Isaiah 11:2

AN IMPORTANT PROPHECY

The involvement of the Holy Spirit was prophesied some six centuries before the baptism of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,
And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.

The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him,
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.”
Isaiah 11:1-2

1. “A Rod from the stem of Jesse”

a) This is a reference to Jesus being “the Son of David”.
b) Jesse was the father of David.
c) The rod represents the scepter.
d) This was a prophecy concerning the Messiah Whom God would send one day.

2. The Anointing of the Messiah

a) It was a consistent practice to anoint someone who will hold public office.
i) The priest would be anointed.
ii) The prophet would also be anointed.
iii) The king certainly would be anointed.
b) Jesus would fulfill all three roles.
i) He would be Prophet.
ii) He would also be Priest.
iii) He would be anointed King as well.

3. The Seven-fold Spirit

a) Isaiah 11:2 describes seven features of the Spirit of God.
b) The Spirit of God in His fullness would be outpoured on the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ.

4. The baptism of the Lord Jesus Christ

a) His baptism was not the same one as what John administered when people came to him in repentance of their sins.
b) Jesus had no sin to confess.
c) His baptism is to be seen as His anointing as the Messiah who would be Prophet, Priest and King!
