"You also, as living stones"

Text: 1 Peter 2:5

LIVING STONES

The Apostle Peter went on to write about how believers are called “living stones”.

“You also, as living stones,
are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood,
to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God
through Jesus Christ.”
1 Peter 2:5

1. “You also, as living stones”

a) Believers are made alive through faith in Christ.
b) They become “living stones”.

2. “Are being built up a spiritual house”

a) Peter must have remembered what the Lord Jesus told him.
i) He will build a Church.
ii) The gates of Hades will not prevail against the Church.
b) The Church was “a spiritual house”.
i) All believers help to make it “a spiritual house”.
ii) There is every reason to be excited about being part of this spiritual house.

3. A special ministry

a) Believers become “a holy priesthood”.
b) What does it mean to be “a holy priesthood?”

4. There were two priesthoods mentioned in the Old Testament

a) The Levitical priesthood
i) The priests had to be from the line of Levi.
ii) They could be Levites (they assisted the priests).
iii) They could be from the line of Aaron and these would be the actual priests.
iv) This line became obsolete when the Old Covenant was replaced by the New Covenant (Hebrews 8:13).
b) The Melchizedek priesthood
i) Jesus is called the High Priest of the Melchizedek priesthood (Hebrews 7:17).
ii) This is an unchangeable priesthood.
iii) We are part of this priesthood.
c) Fulfilment of this ministry:
i) To offer up acceptable sacrifices to God.
ii) Through the Lord Jesus Christ, the High Priest.
