"Twelve foundations"

Text: Revelation 21:14

THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE CITY WALL

There was an angel who accompanied John as he gazed at the New Jerusalem. This angel was like a heavenly guide. He explained to John the foundations of the magnificent city wall.

“Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations,
and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
And he who talked with me had a gold reed
to measure the city, its gates, and its wall.”
Revelation 21:14-15

1. Twelve foundations.

a) These were deep foundations.

b) The depth of these foundations also enhanced the strength of the city wall.

2. The Twelve apostles of the Lamb.

a) There were originally Twelve Apostles.

b) The city

c) Judas was the one who betrayed the Lord and thus he is certainly not one of the Twelve mentioned here.

d) Who was the Twelfth apostle?

i) Some have suggested Matthias who was elected (Acts 2).

ii) Others have suggested the Apostle Paul because of his vast apostolic ministry to the Gentiles.

iii) We will not know for certain the actual identity of all the Apostles.

3. John’s heavenly guide.

a) This was an angel who was a guide.

b) He was a teaching angel who explained the heavenly visions to John.

c) He was also a surveyor.

d) He had a golden measuring reed.

4. Things that were measured:

a) The City

b) The Gates

c) The City Wall
