"A great and high wall with twelve gates"

Text: Revelation 21:12

WALLS OF THE CITY OF JERUSALEM

Walls were built to give protection to cities. The greater the city, the higher the walls. Every city desired to protect its inhabitants from enemies. But there were no enemies in the new Jerusalem!

“Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates,
and twelve angels at the gates,
and names written on them,
which are the names of the twelve tribes
of the children of Israel:
three gates on the east, three gates on the north,
three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.”
Revelation 21:12-13

1. Walls had much significance.

a) It offered protection.

b) But it offered other features as well.

2. A great and high wall around the new Jerusalem.

a) It was to display beauty.

b) It reflected the majesty of God.

c) It brought much pride to its citizens

d) It added grandeur to the city of the new Jerusalem.

3. Twelve gates.

a) Gates were the means by which the inhabitants go in and out of the city.

b) These Gates honoured the original twelve tribes of Israel.

c) Both Levi and Joseph would have a Gate named in their honour.

i) Levi would be included.

ii) So would Joseph be included.

4. These Gates would face all the four corners of the Compass.

a) Three Gates on the East.

b) Three Gates on the North.

c) Three Gates on the South.

d) Three Gates on the West.

e) All would have access to the Holy City through these Gates.
