"I saw four angels"

Text: Revelation 7:1

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SIX SEALS

The Six Seals had to be removed before the scroll of God could be read. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse pose a frightening future reality. (The Seventh Seal would be addressed in Revelation 8).

“After these things I saw four angels
standing at the four corners of the earth,
holding the four winds of the earth,
that the wind should not blow on the earth,
on the sea, or on any tree.”
Revelation 7:1

1. Before the ominous Seventh Seal was opened:

a) A special vision was given to John.

b) John saw four angels.

c) They were standing at the four corners of the earth.

d) They were holding four winds of the earth.

e) They were restraining the winds from blowing on the earth in fury.

2. The Vision of Zechariah.

a) It would be wise to compare this vision with the one given to Zechariah.

b) There are strong similarities.

c) There are also strong differences.

d) A short comparison would be helpful.

“Then I turned and raised my eyes and looked, and behold,
four chariots were coming from between two mountains,
and the mountains were mountains of bronze.
With the first chariot were red horses,
with the second chariot black horses,
with the third chariot white horses,
and with the fourth chariot dappled horses—strong steeds.
Then I answered and said to the angel who talked with me,
‘What are these, my lord?’
And the angel answered and said to me,
‘These are four spirits of heaven,
who go out from their station before the Lord of all the earth.'”
Zechariah 6:1-5

3. The vision in Revelation 6.

a) The Four Horsemen represent wicked rulers.

b) They will cause wars and bring untold suffering.

4. The vision in Zechariah 6.

a) The Horsemen were a reference to mighty angels (spirits).

b) They are the angels of God who have the power to restrain the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

5. The vision in Revelation 7.

a) They had power over the wind.

b) They could hold back the winds or allow them to blow on the earth.

c) These mighty angels held back the powerful winds of destruction so that God’s will would not be thwarted.
