Appreciating our salvation this Christmas
As we enter the Christmas season, there is always a sense of excitement and joy. It is truly the best time of the year as our thoughts focus on the glorious birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. One thing we should always seek to appreciate again is the salvation that He came to give the world. Among all the gifts given at Christmas, none is as vital as the marvellous gift of Christ as our Saviour. Let us be challenged not to take this gift for granted. This Christmas, let us be challenged to re-appreciate the significance of Christ’s birth in a world full of sin and darkness.
Saved from past sins
The Apostle Paul wrote about this wonderful salvation in his letter to his spiritual son Titus. He provided a beautiful perspective of what the salvation of Christ meant to him. He recognised how vital this salvation was in view of his past sins, “For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.” (Titus 3:3) These are difficult sins to deal with. Only the Lord Jesus can save us from our many sins. How should we appreciate this salvation of Christ?
The appearance of the kindness and love of God
1. The timing of this gift of salvation
“But when the kindness and the love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,” (Titus 3:4)
- Paul wrote “But when” to indicate a specific time reference.
- It was a time in which the sins of man would be dealt with.
- Paul was thinking of the time in which God would fulfil His plan of salvation.
- He was referring to the birth of the Lord Jesus, who was sent to save the world.
2. The kindness of God
- The word “kindness” would indicate God’s “goodness”.
- It is associated with God’s love in the word “lovingkindness”, as used by David: “Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,” (Psalm 63:3).
- God’s lovingkindness was manifested through the advent of Christ.
- His goodness was seen in the salvation that Christ came to give.
3. The love of God
- The word “love” in Greek (philanthropia) is the term from which we derive the English word “philanthropy”.
- It is a reference to God’s love for mankind.
- This special love was shown through the glorious birth of Christ.
- God, who is our Saviour, sought to love us by sending the Lord Jesus to fulfil His plan.
4. Manifested in the person of Christ
The kindness and love of God appeared toward man through Christ’s coming into this world. These divine blessings of God were clearly evidenced in the Lord Jesus’ life and ministry. All that Christ did, including His great sacrifice on the cross, brought us redemption and salvation from our sins. Let us be challenged to dwell on, deeply appreciate and delight in the kindness and love of God all over again this Christmas.
