Dealing with difficult moments
As we journey through life, we will be faced with distressing moments. The problems of life, whether about our work, family or health, can cause us to feel anxious, distressed and anguished. The mind and heart are unable to maintain stillness and we may end up with feelings of being overwhelmed.
King David had to face all kinds of troubles as king, especially dealing with enemies. He had enemies who sought to destroy him and Israel. They were evil, vicious and bloodthirsty. In Psalm 61, David wrote of being overwhelmed due to his enemies, “When my heart is overwhelmed” (Ps 61:2). How did David address these overwhelming feelings? He learnt to turn to God in prayer.
Turning to God in prayer
1. Crying out to God in times of distress
“Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed;” (Psalm 61:1,2)
- David sought the Lord with a heartfelt cry.
- He understood that God would hear and attend to his prayer.
- David felt like he was at the “end of the earth”…feelings of despair.
- There was a sense of being overwhelmed… he was worn out, depressed and in anguish.
- However, he knew that turning to the Lord would help him overcome these feelings.
2. Praying for God’s leading
“Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” (Psalm 61:2)
- David recognised that he needed God to lead him out of his depth of despair.
- He asked the Lord to lead, raise and help him climb to a higher rock.
- It is to have a higher, better perspective of life…to see things from a fresh point of view.
- When we are able to see our circumstances from a greater perspective, we would be able to overcome our feelings of distress.
- A higher perspective of life, especially from God’s perspective, helps us to become stronger, steadier and calmer.
3. Protection from God
“For You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy.” (Psalm 61:3)
- David was able to turn his focus on God as his shelter that would protect.
- God would shield him from all the attacks of the enemies.
- The Lord was also David’s strong tower…to defend him from all challenges.
- No matter how strong the enemies were, they would not be able to overcome the Lord.
- Let us be challenged to look to the Lord as our shelter and strong tower.
Post-prayer responses
After we have sought the Lord in prayer, what are some appropriate responses? Let us be challenged to abide in the Lord and His presence. David wrote, “I will abide in Your tabernacle forever” (Psalm 61:4). This is not about the physical tabernacle. It is about the presence of the Lord. Our challenge is to abide in the Lord as our shelter and strong tower…to abide in His presence. Let us also be challenged to trust, “I will trust in the shelter of Your wings” (Psalm 61:4). Let us exercise faith and trust in the Lord as we pray to Him, knowing that He will hear, lead and protect us. Our faith must replace our anxiety and distress. Let us be challenged to look to the Lord in prayer and overcome the distressing moments of life.
