"A Branch of righteousness"

Text: Jeremiah 23:5

A PROFOUND PROPHECY I

God would not only gather the remnant of His flock. He would also raise up good shepherds who would faithfully care for the sheep! A truly profound prophecy was then pronounced!

“‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD,
‘That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall reign and prosper,
And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.'”
Jeremiah 23:5

1. “‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD”

a) This is a prophetic statement.

b) The word “days” is not to be taken literally.

i) Time, viewed from God’s perspective, would be “days”.

ii) But viewed from Man’s perspective,
this prophecy would be fulfilled when the Lord Jesus came.

2. “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness”

a) God would raise a descendant of David.

b) He would come from the Davidic line, hence He would be called “a Branch”.

c) The Branch of Righteousness

i) He would be totally unlike all the kings of Judah.

ii) None of the kings could be called “a Branch of righteousness!”

iii) All of them were unrighteous.

3. “A King shall reign and prosper”

a) This Branch of righteousness would be a King.

b) He shall reign and prosper.

c) The Wise Men learned about this “King of the Jews” (Matthew 2:2).

4. “And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth”

a) This King would have a kingdom that would cover the earth.

b) He would rule in this Kingdom of God.

i) He would execute judgment.

ii) He would bring about righteousness in the earth (and not just Israel).

5. Identification of that Branch of righteousness

a) He is the Lord Jesus Christ.

b) He reigns as King.

c) He would one day establish a divine kingdom on earth.
