The Glory of the LORD Shall Be Revealed

Text: Isaiah 40

1. Introduction

a. The glory of the Lord has always been there   (cf. Isaiah 6:3)
b. But sometimes we cannot see His glory
c. The Lord must reveal His glory to us
d. We are deeply grateful when He does

2. God’s people could no longer see the glory of the LORD

a. Because of the problems caused by self   (Isaiah 40:1-2)
i. Iniquity
ii. Sin
iii. Resulting in warfare
b. Because of the wrong thoughts of the people   (Isaiah 40:27)
i. “My way is hidden from the LORD”
ii. “And my just claim is passed over by my God”

3. The glory of the LORD had to be revealed to the people   (Isaiah 40:5)

a. Recapture
i. Lost knowledge
ii. Lost faith
b. Renew
i. Appreciation
ii. Awe of God

4. Ways that the glory of the LORD is revealed

a. The Word of God
i. The Word of God stands forever   (Isaiah 40: 6-8)
ii. Each word will be fulfilled
iii. The Word of God is to be proclaimed   (Isaiah 40:9)
iv. The message: God is a personal God (“Behold your God!”)
b. The Work of God
i. His work is before Him   (Isaiah 40:10)
ii. He will feed His flock like a shepherd   (Isaiah 40:11)
iii. This is a Messianic reference to the Lord Jesus Christ   (cf. Mark 6:34, Mark 10:13-16)
iv. Look at the works that the Messiah was to do   (cf. Isaiah 61)

5. A personal understanding and experience of the glory of the Lord

a. Understanding God for who He is   (Isaiah 40:28)
i. The everlasting God
ii. The LORD
iii. The Creator of the ends of the earth
iv. He neither faints nor is weary
b. Experiencing the reality of God in our lives   (Isaiah 40:29)
i. He gives power to the weak
ii. To those who have no might He increases strength

6. Our Appropriate Response

a. Wait on the Lord   (Isaiah 40:31)
b. Find renewal of strength for life and ministry
i. To mount up with wings like eagles
ii. To run and not be weary
iii. To walk and not faint
