"God be thanked..."

Text: Romans 6:17

THE LIFE ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY SIN

What is life like, when affected by sin? Recall what Paul wrote in the earlier chapters:-

1. The Gentile comes under the wrath of God because of his sinful ways (Cf. Romans 1).

2.The Jew fares no better, despite his knowledge of the Scriptures, for he is guilty of breaking God’s laws (Cf. Romans 2-3).

THANK GOD FOR HIS GRACE

Though the word “grace” may not have been actually used, there is no question that it is only out of God’s grace freely bestowed, that sinful man could turn away from sin.

“But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin,
yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine
to which you were delivered.”
Romans 6:17

1. Though you were slaves to sin

a) There was grace to turn away from sin.
b) There was grace to turn to God for His salvation in Christ Jesus.

2. Obeyed from the heart

a) Genuine faith in Christ will always involve a heart-felt decision.
b) Genuine salvation experienced will cause a person to turn away from sin.
c) He will desire naturally to obey God and not sin!

3. The form (Greek: tupon) of doctrine

a) The word “form” may be translated “type”.
b) God’s salvation (doctrine) has certain definite features (typically).

ii) Living righteously
iii) Living in loving obedience to God
