Day 184 – Psalm 80

“You have fed them with the bread of tears…” Psalm 80:5a

WARNING OF CONSEQUENCES OF DIVINE ANGER

Asaph knew well Moses’ teaching on the subject of God’s anger if Israel continued to choose to walk in the path of sin. As a Levite, he would be most familiar with Leviticus 26. In this chapter, Israel was warned about the dreadful consequences of sin (Leviticus 26:14-39).

PONDERING THE PITIFUL STATE OF ISRAEL

Asaph pondered over the pitiful state of Israel and brought this matter up to the Lord in prayer.

“You have fed them with the bread of tears,
And given them tears to drink in great measure.”
Psalm 80:5

1. “You have fed them”

In the past God had fed Israel miraculously in the wilderness (Book of Exodus).

a) He provided manna and quails.
b) He gave them abundant water to drink from.

2. “You have fed them with the bread of tears”

In the present God had fed Israel with something else.

a) The bread of tears.
i) Bread that was eaten with tears.
ii) No bread… but tears.
b) Asaph did not blame God for causing Israel to suffer like this.
i) There was a gentle suggestion that Israel had suffered enough.
ii) How long more must the nation continue to eat the bread of tears?

3. “And given them tears to drink in great measure”

a) Imagine the following diet:-
i) Bread- Tears
ii) Beverage- More tears
b) Tears in great measure.

Israel had sinned and was suffering the consequences of sin. Tears were being shared copiously before the Lord. Would God not be moved by these tears shed by His people?
