Day 151 – Psalm 78

“And He brought them to His holy border…” Psalm 78:54a

THE HOLY LAND

Some have described Israel as “The Holy Land”. How did this phrase come about? It would be interesting to note Asaph’s understanding of the land of Israel.

“And He brought them to His holy border,
This mountain which His right hand had acquired.”
Psalm 78:54

1. “And He brought them”

a) This is an obvious reference to God leading His own people.
b) He had safely brought them from Egypt, through the wilderness to Canaan.

2. “To His holy border”

a) This is a very significant phrase.
b) The very border of the Promised Land is called “holy”.
c) There is high regard for the land as:-
i) A land sanctified by God Himself.
ii) A land that God had consecrated for His people.
iii) Even the border is to be regarded as “holy”.

3. “This mountain which His right hand had acquired”

a) The reference is not very clear. It could be Mount Horeb, or Mount Zion.
b) Where God’s Presence is made known, that place is “holy ground”.
c) The important thing to note is that God is spoken of as the One who had acquired it.

A HOLY REGARD

A holy regard for the land which God gave had to be taught! The children of Israel had lost sight of Canaan as “The Holy Land”.

1. Jacob learned how to consecrate Bethel as a special place where God met him (Genesis 28:10-22).

2. Moses was told by God that the ground he stood was “holy ground” (Exodus 3:1-7).

3. God sanctified Mount Sinai when He came down from heaven to speak to Israel (Exodus 20).
