Day 137 – Psalm 105

“He also destroyed all the firstborn in their land…” Psalm 105:36a

THE TENTH PLAGUE

If only Pharaoh and his court had carefully and humbly pondered the nine plagues God had unleashed on Egypt! They would have been spared the most dreadful one of all- the tenth plague.

“He also destroyed all the firstborn in their land,
The first of all their strength.”
Psalm 105:36

1. “He”

a) God took full responsibility for all the plagues in Egypt.
b) This includes the tenth plague.

2. “He also destroyed all the firstborn in their land”

a) Some have difficulties understanding how God could have killed all the firstborn.
b) Others have concluded that the God of the Old Testament is a cruel Deity.

UNDERSTANDING THE PLAGUES

It is important that we study the plagues recorded in the Book of Exodus mentioned here in Psalm 105. Let us seek to understand why these plagues took place.

1. The Judgments of God

a) One of the reasons why the psalmist wrote Psalm 105 was to highlight God’s “judgments” (Psalm 105:5, 7)
b) The plagues unleashed against Pharaoh and Egypt were His judgment against them.

2. Reasons for this series of acts of judgment against Pharaoh and Egypt

a) The injustice done against the children of Israel by enslaving them (Exodus 1:11).
b) The Israelites became slaves under harsh taskmasters (Exodus 1:11).
c) The baby boys of the children of Israel were put to death (Exodus 1:15-16, 22).
d) Pharaoh rejected God and His claims and instead exalted himself (Exodus 9:17).
e) He went back on his word to let the children of Israel go (Exodus 8:32; 9:35).
f) Every plague was preceded by stern words of warning but these words went unheeded (Exodus 7-12).
