Reporting to the Chief Priests and Pharisees

Text: John 7: 45-49

REPORTING TO THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND PHARISEES

The officers who had been sent to arrest Jesus returned to the chief priests empty-handed. They could not arrest Him as they were ordered!

“Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, ‘Why have you not brought Him?’ The officers answered, ‘No man ever spoke like this Man!’ Then the Pharisees answered them, ‘Are you also deceived? Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.’”
John 7:45-49

1. “Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees”

i. They were chief priests.
ii. Some of the people were Pharisees.

Why had they not brought Jesus back in custody?

2. The honest reply of the officers

a. They heard Jesus even as they waited for an opportunity to arrest Him.
b. They were deeply impressed and impacted by Jesus.
c. Thus they declared: “No man ever spoke like this Man!”

3. The retort of the Pharisees

a. They were angry with these officers.
b. Accusingly they spoke, “Are you also deceived?”

4. Further worries of the chief priests and Pharisees

a. They worried that the leaders of the nation had believed in Jesus.
b. They were concerned that “the rulers” had come to have faith in Him.
c. This would spell trouble for them.

5. A nasty remark

They described the multitude (the crowd) as people who did know the law and thus were accursed!
