Mixed Responses
Text: John 7: 40-44
MIXED RESPONSES
The message of the Lord Jesus should have seen everyone turn to Him in grateful faith. Sadly, there were mixed responses instead.
“Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, ‘Truly this is the Prophet.’ Others said, ‘This is the Christ.’ But some said, ‘Will the Christ come out of Galilee? Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?’ So there was a division among the people because of Him. Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.”
John 7:40-44
1. There were at least four different response
a. Some believed that Jesus was “the Prophet”.
i. He was being compared with Moses.
ii. There was a prophecy concerning a special prophet like Moses (Deuteronomy 18:18).
b. Some others believed that He was the Christ.
i. Because of the miracles He performed.
ii. Because of the way He ministered.
c. Still others cast doubts about Jesus being the Christ (The Messiah).
i. They raised doubts because Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee.
ii. The Messiah was supposed to come from Bethlehem.
iii. He would be of the seed of David.
iv. This group did not check out the facts/ the truth thoroughly enough.
v. Jesus was born in Bethlehem and He was of the seed of David (Matthew 1).
d. There was another group who was hoping to arrest Jesus.
i. But His time had not yet come.
ii. Thus they were not able to seize Him.
BEING SURE OF OUR FAITH IN JESUS
How wonderful it is to believe in Jesus as the Son of God who came to be our Saviour. He proved He was Saviour and Lord by His life and power. His mighty miracles demonstrate that God had attested to His eternal Sonship. Believing in Jesus is a wonderful life-transforming blessing from God.
