A Correct Understanding Needed
Text: John 6: 49-51
A CORRECT UNDERSTANDING NEEDED
The Jews had the highest opinion about Moses providing Manna in the days when the children of Israel wandered for forty years in the wilderness (Exodus 16). Over the years, this period of Israel’s history had become misunderstood and misapplied. Jesus has to give them a correct understanding.
“Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”
John 6:49-51
1. Essential comparison and contrast
a) Manna was the physical bread given; Jesus was the bread from heaven.
b) The children of Israel ate of the manna but they died in unbelief.
c) Those who partake of Jesus as the bread of life will never perish but have everlasting life.
2. Further explanation of the living bread
a) Jesus spoke of Himself as
i) The bread of God John 6:33
ii) The bread of life John 6:35
iii) The bread from heaven John 6:41
iv) The living bread John 6:51
b) The promise of Jesus
i) If one eats of this bread, he will live forever.
ii) This is not a reference to the physical life on earth.
iii) It is a reference to life eternal with God in heaven.
3. An important explanation
a) The bread He spoke of was a reference to His flesh.
b) Jesus would give His life to atone for the sins of mankind.
i) He would take the penalty of our sins upon Himself.
ii) He would die on our behalf to appease the justice and wrath of God.
iii) Through faith in His atonement for our sins we will be forgiven and have eternal life.
