Complete Misunderstanding

Text: John 6: 52-54

COMPLETE MISUNDERSTANDING

The Jews began to show that they had completely misunderstood what Jesus taught.

The Jews therefore quarrelled among themselves, saying, ‘How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has, eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.’”

John 6:52-54

1. “The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves”

a) They began with doubting.
b) They continued with complaining.
c) They were now quarreling among themselves.

2. What they could have done

a) They could have clarified things with Jesus.
b) They could have raised their questions to Jesus.
c) They could have been humble to learn from Jesus.
d) They did none of the above and they ended with complete misunderstanding.

3. Further emphasis given by Jesus

a) The imagery of “eating and drinking” were used metaphorically.
b) They illustrated a common truth: Food and drink must be partaken of and digested.
c) Without food and drink we will perish ultimately.

4. The point of this use of imagery

a) The Jews were used to practising a religion in the following ways:
i) There were rituals to follow.
ii) Prayers were said and Hymns were sung.
But by and large, religion was something “external” to the Jews.
b) Jesus was teaching differently
i) True religion must be internalised.
ii) One must fully believe in order to have eternal life and have hope of the resurrection.
