The Ministry of John the Baptiser
Text: John 3:26-27
“And they came to John and said to him, ‘Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified- behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!’
John answered and said, ‘A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.’”John 3:26-27
THE MINISTRY OF JOHN THE BAPTISER
1. He was the fore-runner for the Lord Jesus Christ.
2. His task
a. To tell people that God was sending His Messiah (The Christ).
b. To help people to prepare to receive Him as the Saviour.
c. Sins must be confessed.
d. Baptism was given to all who repented of their sins.
3. The success of John’s ministry
a. Many heard John’s mighty messages.
b. They confessed their sins and they sought baptism.
c. John had many faithful disciples who were loyal to him.
THE CONCERN OF SOME OF THE DISCIPLES OF JOHN
1. They reported to John that Jesus had many disciples.
2. They were expressing concern that Jesus is proving to be a bigger success than their master John.
JOHN’S ENLIGHTENED REPLY TO HIS DISCIPLES
1. “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.”
2. His disciples must not be alarmed
a. They must not be unduly upset.
b. They must not entertain foolish human jealousy.
c. They must seek spiritual enlightenment to comprehend what was happening.
3. The reason why Jesus was even more successful than John
a. This was the work of Heaven.
b. God Himself was giving Jesus the success that He was enjoying.
c. The obvious success of being able to draw many disciples after Him indicated that God was blessing His ministry.
