Returning To God The Father

Text: John 14: 28

RETURNING TO GOD THE FATHER

The Disciples did not fully comprehend why Jesus had to suffer and die. To many, death ends everything! This was not the perspective of Jesus. He offers a wonderfully deep insight.

“You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’
for My Father is greater than I.”

John 14:28

1. “You have heard Me say to you”

a. Jesus had to repeat some of His words/ teachings to His disciples.
b. There were reasons why He had to repeat Himself:
i. Because the Disciples did not fully comprehend Him.
ii. Because they seemed to forget His teachings before too long.
iii. Because they did not know how to apply His teachings in their life and ministry.
iv. Because they misunderstood what He said.

2. “I am going away and coming back to you”

a. This was a puzzling statement.
b. How could Jesus go away and then come back to them.
c. The miracle of Lazarus resurrected from the dead had not made a deep enough impact on their hearts and minds.
d. Once again, Jesus had to make this statement.

3. “If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to My Father’”

a. Death was not to be feared.
b. Death was simply the gateway to Heaven.
c. Death could not hold Jesus in its grasp!
d. Jesus had left His home in Heaven.
e. He would soon return to see His Father in Heaven.
f. The thought of Jesus seeing His Father once again should bring joy to the heart of those who truly loved Him.
g. There would be no greater joy than to see Jesus returning to His beloved Father in heaven.

4. “My Father is greater than I”

a. The suffering and death of Jesus was planned by the Father Himself.
b. Jesus in His human form had to submit to His Father’s will! God in all His majesty is to be obeyed!

iii.
