"I will cut off the cities of your land"

Text: Micah 5:11

OTHER THINGS THAT GOD WOULD CUT OFF

The reconstruction of a nation is not an easy task. The Lord had to cut off a number of things that would hinder the development of the new nation. The following was another item that needed to be cut off!

“I will cut off the cities of your land
And throw down all your strongholds.”
Micah 5:11

1. “I will cut off the cities of your land”

a) At first reading, this text may sound very puzzling.
b) Why would God cut off cities in the land?

2. A little background may be helpful

a) King Uzziah was a mighty king; he was the grandfather of the reprobate king Ahaz (Isaiah 7).
b) 2 Chronicles 26 describes a number of building programs Uzziah engaged in:
i) He built towers… he fortified them (2 Chronicles 26:9).
ii) He built towers in the desert (2 Chronicles 26:10).
iii) His fame spread far and wide (2 Chronicles 26:15).
c) In his great strength, Uzziah committed a grave transgression.
i) When he was strong his heart was lifted up, to his destruction (2 Chronicles 26:16).
ii) He tried to enter into the Lord’s house which was forbidden to all but the priests and Levites.

3. “And throw down all your strongholds”

a) Cities were always fortified.
b) They could become strongholds.
c) Or strongholds could be built around the cities.
d) Towers were also built as part of the protection of the cities.

WHAT GOD WANTED TO DO

The following are some of the reasons why God would cut off cities. Israel had fallen time and again when cities and strongholds were relied upon!

1. To prevent foolish pride from arising.

2. To ensure that there would be full reliance on the Lord and His protection.

3. To enable His people to see how He would deliver them from powerful enemies.

4. To enhance confidence and trust in Him.

5. Israel need not fear attacks from enemies. It must overcome the problems of unbelief and fear!
