"Through deceit they refuse to know Me"

Text: Jeremiah 9:6

THE PROBLEM OF DECEPTION

The problem of iniquity was far deeper than many realised. The LORD had to explain to Jeremiah how deadly sin really was!

“‘Everyone will deceive his neighbour,
And will not speak the truth;
They have taught their tongue to speak lies;
They weary themselves to commit iniquity.
Your dwelling place is in the midst of deceit;
Through deceit they refuse to know Me,’ says the LORD.”
Jeremiah 9:5-6

1. “Everyone will deceive his neighbour, and will not speak the truth”

a) Anyone can be affected by sin.
b) Neighbours will end up deceiving each other.
c) Deception makes a person unable to speak the truth naturally.

2. “They have taught their tongue to speak lies”

a) Lying can become a deep-seated problem.
b) Some would even teach their tongues to speak lies as if they are speaking truth.
c) In time, they will not speak the truth.

3. “They weary themselves to commit iniquity”

a) Telling lies is wearisome.
b) One has to remember the lies told or be caught out.
c) This will weary the person.

4. “Your dwelling place is in the midst of deceit”

a) Imagine one’s dwelling place is amidst deceitful people.
b) There would be little or no sense of safety or security.
c) No neighbour can be trusted!
d) In time, the whole nation would be affected adversely.

5. “‘Through deceit they refuse to know Me,’ says the LORD”

a) Deceit has other implications.
b) It can cause a person to refuse to know God.
c) The reason is because the LORD is a God of truth.
d) When one practises deceit, knowledge of God and truth would be very difficult to obtain.
