"If you heed Me carefully"

Text: Jeremiah 17:24

A WORD OF ASSURANCE

The LORD did not just ask for obedience. He also promised wonderful blessings to His people if they would give heed to what He says to them.

“‘And it shall be, if you heed Me carefully,’ says the LORD,
‘to bring no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day,
but hallow the Sabbath day, to do no work in it,
then shall enter the gates of this city
kings and princes sitting on the throne of David,
riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes,
accompanied by the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem;
and this city shall remain forever.'”
Jeremiah 17:24-25

1. “‘And it shall be, if you heed Me carefully,’ says the LORD, ‘to bring no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but hallow the Sabbath day, to do no work in it'”

a) “The Sabbath Day”

i) It was meant to be a day of rest for workers.

ii) Workers must not be exploited and forced to work.

iii) There must be proper regard for all who serve.

b) It was to be hallowed.

i) It should be regarded as a day for worship and not just physical rest.

ii) This would reflect a reverence for God and His commandments.

iii) Worship should be the most natural response from God’s people.

2. The blessings that God would give

a) The city of Jerusalem will remain forever.

b) The royal family can continue to move about freely.

i) The gates

They can move freely without fear of enemies.

ii) Kings and princes

They can continue to sit on thrones and rule.

c) The people

i) They will be able to enjoy the city of Jerusalem.

ii) They can be there to give support to their kings and princes.

d) Judah and Jerusalem

i) They will be preserved.

ii) They will be blessed.
