"To make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings."
Text: Hebrews 2:10
ANOTHER WONDERFUL DESCRIPTION OF JESUS
The author of Hebrews kept coming up with special phrases to ascribe glory to Jesus. Let us ponder how he addressed Jesus in the following text.
“For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things
and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory,
to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.”
Hebrews 2:10
1. The captain (ton archegon)
a) This word describes “a leader” or “an originator”.
b) The word “captain” is not to be understood in a military sense.
c) In this text it is simply used to denote Jesus as “the leader of (our) salvation”.
2. The work of the captain
a) He leads sinners to become sons of God.
b) He leads these sons to glory.
c) He is rightly called “the leader/ originator (captain) of their salvation”.
3. The work of “perfecting” the captain
a) This work of “perfecting” does not apply to the Divinity of Jesus.
b) However this work of “perfecting” applies fittingly to Jesus as the Son of Man.
i) As man He must accept suffering as a part of life
ii) As man He must overcome all negativity associated with suffering
iii) He must allow the sufferings He had to endure to “perfect” Him
iv) He was rigorously tested and suffered terribly (on the cross)
v) He did not flinch even though He was cruelly afflicted
In that He perfectly endured so much pain and suffering, He became the “captain of our salvation”. When He gave His life for us He effected God’s plan of redemption.
