"He who sanctifies... "

Text: Hebrews 2:11a

ANOTHER DESCRIPTIVE TITLE FOR JESUS

The author of Hebrews never tired of finding descriptive titles for Jesus. Let us consider yet another instructive title of Jesus.

“For both He who sanctifies
and those who are being sanctified are all of one…”
Hebrews 2:11a

1. He who sanctifies (ho hagiazon)

a) The origin of this thought may be traced to a statement Jesus made concerning sanctification.

“And for their sakes I sanctify Myself…”
John 17:19

b) The word “sanctifies” (hagiazo) simply means “to make holy”.
c) Only He who has Divine authority and power can sanctify others.
d) Only He who has proven Himself that He can sanctify Himself (as Man) could effectively bring about this concept of sanctification.
e) Jesus rightly deserves this title “He who sanctifies”.

2. Those who are being sanctified

a) The first work is that of salvation.

Believers become “children of God” [Cf. John 1:12]. (They are called “sons” in Hebrews 2:10).

b) They are also “sanctified” by the Lord Jesus.
i) They are declared holy by Jesus.
ii) They are being “made holy” by Jesus who sanctifies.

3. They are all of one

a) This is a most astonishing statement.
b) Jesus so identifies with those who believe in Him. He considers them “One” with Him.
c) As Jesus is “sanctified” (holy), so are all who are the sons of glory. They share in His glorious holiness!
