Hebrews
Day
Day 240

"He takes away the first that He may establish the second."

Text: Hebrews 10:9

THE MOSAIC LAW

The law of Moses was given by God Himself. It could not be easily set aside. There was only One Person who could do that! There was only one way He could do that!

“Then He said, ‘Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.’
He takes away the first, that He may establish the second.”
Hebrews 10:9

1. Then He said

a) This is a reference to Jesus.
b) The Messianic Psalm 40 was written prophetically.
c) Jesus fulfilled this prophecy.

2. Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God

a) Jesus carefully fulfilled God’s will.
b) His purpose in coming to earth was to fulfil God’s will.

3. Ramifications of fulfilling God’s will

Two ramifications are considered in this text:-

a) He takes away the first
i) This is a reference to the Mosaic law and covenant.
ii) The fulfilling of God’s will resulted in the taking away of the law of burnt sacrifices and offerings.
b) That He may establish the second
i) The second (covenant) could not be established till the first one was made obsolete.
ii) The New (“second”) Covenant was created by Jesus.
iii) This was in accordance to the will of God.
iv) This New Covenant was established and sealed by the blood of Jesus.
