"By that will we have been sanctified..."

Text: Hebrews 10:10

THE LAW OF GOD AND THE WILL OF GOD

The law of God was “everything” where ancient Israel was concerned. The law was unchangeable! The Mosaic covenant was permanent. Nothing could be changed or so it seemed.

The author of Hebrews suggested that there was one way in which the law could be changed- through the will of God!

“By that will we have been sanctified through
the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
Hebrews 10:10

1. The will of God

a) The law was essentially an expression of the will of God.
b) Hence the law was subject to the will of God.
c) If there was anything that could change the law of God, it would be the will of God.
d) God could make a decree and that would be His will.
e) In turn that decree would become law.

2. By that will

a) God did exercise His will and that changed the Mosaic law.
b) Through that will the old law became obsolete and a new one had taken over.

3. We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ

a) Our sanctification would not be through animal sacrifices.
b) Our sanctification would come through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ.
c) Through His single sacrifice we are now “set apart” as God’s people.

4. Once for all

a) There would never be a need for the old sacrificial system.
b) Neither would Christ need to sacrifice Himself ever again- His offering of His body was “once for all”!
