Day 12

"Why do You make men like fish of the sea"

Text: Habakkuk 1:14

QUESTIONS AND OBSERVATIONS

Habakkuk relied on his knowledge of God. He did not realise there were gaps in his understanding of God! His less-than-perfect theology caused him to raise more questions in prayer to the Lord God.

“Why do You make men like fish of the sea,
Like creeping things that have no ruler over them?
They take up all of them with a hook,
They catch them in their net,
And gather them in their dragnet.
Therefore they rejoice and are glad.”
Habakkuk 1:14-15

1. Questions

a) Once the questions begin it is hard to control this line of thought.
b) Habakkuk now questions why God made men like fish of the sea.
c) Or like creeping things that have no rulers.

2. Line of thought

a) This is a faulty line of thought and reasoning.
b) God did not make men like fish or like creeping things.
c) God made mankind in his image.
i) Capable of righteousness.
ii) Capable of bringing glory to God.
d) God is not to be held responsible if
i) Man becomes like fish easily caught
ii) Or like creeping things that have no rulers!

OBSERVATIONS

Habakkuk’s feelings of sadness and despair were fueled by his observations about the Chaldeans.

1. He compared them to skillful fishermen.

2. Their fishing equipment

a) Hook
b) Net (small… handheld)
c) Dragnet (larger… many men would be needed to let down and haul in a dragnet)

3. The happiness of the Chaldeans

They rejoice and feel glad that they enjoy so much success in war! Habakkuk could not fathom how God could allow them to enjoy the many victories they have in battle!
