Text: Habakkuk

THE AUTHOR

Little is known of the personal life and ministry of the author Habakkuk. His name does not appear in any other book in the Scriptures. Our knowledge of Habakkuk is drawn from his short prophetic book. He identified himself as a prophet of the Lord (Habakkuk 1:1).

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Habakkuk wrote about the invasion of the Chaldeans (Habakkuk 1:6). The word “Chaldean” was used synonymously with the word “Babylonians”. Amos ministered as God’s prophet in Israel, till the Assyrians conquered and destroyed it in 722 BC.

The Babylonians conquered Assyria and threatened to invade Judah in the 6th century. Habakkuk was a prophet who ministered in Judah before the invasion of the Babylonians in 586 BC.

THEOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The prophet Habakkuk struggled greatly with how God could tolerate the Babylonians and their vicious wickedness. To the sensitive prophetic soul of Habakkuk, that the Chaldeans could invade Judah and overwhelm it was a theological nightmare he could not fully comprehend.

SEEKING ENLIGHTENMENT

Prayerfully,
