Ephesians

Day 173

"To know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."

Text: Ephesians 3:19

THE LOVE OF CHRIST WHICH PASSES KNOWLEDGE

As Paul prayed for the Ephesians to comprehend the love of Christ, he was soon taken up with the thought that this subject “passes knowledge”. The word “passes” (“huperballousan”- literally means “exceedingly great”) was used by Paul to describe the power of God. Let’s examine these texts side by side.

And what is the exceeding (“huperballo”) greatness
of His power toward us…
EPHESIANS 1:19

The love of Christ which passes (“huperballo”) knowledge…
EPHESIANS 3:19

As it is impossible to fully measure the power of God, so it is impossible to fully measure the greatness of the love of Christ.

ANOTHER DESCRIPTION OF THE LOVE OF CHRIST

Another brilliant text where Paul waxed eloquence concerning the love of Christ is found in the epistle to the Romans.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine,
or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors
through Him who loved us.
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life,
nor angels nor principalities nor powers,
nor things present nor things to come,
nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing,
shall be able to separate us from the love of God
which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
ROMANS 8:35, 37-39

The following thoughts stand out.

1. The fact of love

The love of God and the love of Christ are one and the same. There is no doubt at all as to the fact that God truly loves us.

2. The fullness of God’s love

Human love could never be described in this way! Only a full divine love can be so described! Paul writes with deep conviction that nothing will ever separate us from the love of God. It is breath-taking to imagine having such a deep sense of commitment from God to us. Great strength can result through comprehension of this marvelously full love of God.
