Ephesians

Ephesians
Day
Day 172

"That you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."

Text: Ephesians 3:17-19

DEEPENING OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE LOVE OF CHRIST

In Paul’s mind, believers could do no better than to deepen their knowledge of the love of Christ. There is so much to discover about this divine love, that Paul used mathematical language to describe it. Christ’s love was so real and concrete that one may speak of its width, length, depth and height.

EVIDENCE OF THE LOVE OF CHRIST

We can trace the theme of love behind every action, and every blessing that we have received from God.

1. God’s love for us is evidenced in His choosing us to be His people (Ephesians 1:4).

2. The fullness of God’s blessings evidence His great love (Ephesians 1:3-14).

3. That Christ endured so much pain and suffering must speak of profound love (Ephesians 2:1-9).

CULTIVATION OF A HEART OF LOVE

Was there not love in the heart of the Ephesians? Yes, there was. Paul commended them for the love that was already clearly displayed. Let us recall how Paul expressed his delight in the love that the Ephesians had for others.

Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus
and your love for all the saints…
EPHESIANS 1:15

However, there would always be room for more love to fill the heart. Paul was always deeply concerned that believers should devote time to cultivate their love for God and for each other. In Paul’s letter to a Church that was famed for its love, he added this prayer.

And this I pray, that your love may abound
still more and more in knowledge and all discernment.
PHILIPPIANS 1:9

A FAVOURITE TOPIC IN FELLOWSHIP

It is natural that believers gather together for both worship and fellowship. What would be one of the favourite topics for discussion when believers fellowship with each other. If we were to follow Paul’s trend of thought we would come to the conclusion that one of the topics would be “the love of Christ.”

Every child of God would be able to speak of his experience of the love of Christ. One could speak of the width of Christ’s love. Another may speak of its length. A third may speak of its depth and the fourth could speak of the height of Christ’s love.

PRAYING FOR A DEEPER LOVE

It is vital that we take time to ponder the love of Christ, lest we end up taking it for granted. Even more importantly, we must emulate the example of Paul in praying that we may be rooted and grounded in love for the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us pray that we may always abide and abound in the love of Christ.
