"Put off all these..."

Text: Colossians 3:8

OUR LIFE IN CHRIST

The Christian life is a most challenging one indeed. The apostle Paul now makes another list of things that must be “put off”.

“But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger,
wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.”

Colossians 3:8

1. “But now”

a) Inferential idea.
b) After careful consideration of what Paul had written.
c) Action must now be taken.

2. “You yourselves”

a) We are to act for ourselves.
b) Rather than have something imposed on us.
c) Personal responsibility must be taken seriously.

3. “Put off all these”

a) This is not an exhaustive list.
b) Read and compare this list with the one stated in Colossians 3:5.
c) All these sins must be dealt with summarily.

COMMON SIN PROBLEMS THAT ARE OFTEN IGNORED

The sin problems listed in Colossians 3:8 appears to be more “common” ones. They also seem to be “less serious”. Hence sometimes these problems are not given serious thought.

1. Common sin problems

a) These are still sin problems.
b) These ought to be given as much attention as more deadly ones.

2. The best way to deal with sins

a) To put to death (Colossians 3:5).
b) To put off (Colossians 3:8).
c) To seek the things which are above (Colossians 3:1).
d) To set our minds on things above (Colossians 3:2).
e) To look forward to the Second Coming of Christ (Colossians 3:4).
