"Put off the old man with his deeds."

Text: Colossians 3:9

AN IMPORTANT UNDERLYING REASON

What was the underlying reason behind Paul’s strong insistence to put to death the way of sin? The answer is intimated here.

“Do not lie to one another, since you have put
off the old man with his deeds.”

Colossians 3:9

1. “Do not lie to one another”

a) This verse is best read together with Colossians 3:5-8.
b) These verses form a cluster of thoughts.
c) Lying is just another sin to be included in this cluster.

2. “Since you have put off the old man with his deeds”

a) What is “the old man?”
i) It is a reference to the old unregenerate self.
ii) The unregenerate person can be very steeped in sin.
b) “With his deeds”
i) The activities associated with the old unregenerate self.
ii) This is mentioned in brief in Colossians 3:5-9.

3. “Put off”

a) It can also be translated with the word “discarded”.
b) The point of it all:-
i) The old nature and its deeds are put off/discarded.
ii) There is a definite and clean break from the sinful activities of the past.

4. “Since”

a) Since faith in Christ.
b) Since a better understanding of what it means to believe in Christ.
c) Since a deep commitment to walk with Christ.

TRUE FAITH

What is true faith in the Lord Jesus Christ?

1. It is more than a verbal confession of faith.

2. It is best seen in the way the old unregenerate self and its deeds are discarded completely.
