"Having a form of godliness..."

Text: 2 Timothy 3:5

A CLOSER EXAMINATION IV

The Apostle Paul felt that he had to include a couple more characteristics to complete the list.

“Having a form of godliness, but denying its power.
And from such people turn away!”
2 Timothy 3:5

1. “Having a form of godliness”

a) True Godliness
i) This should be genuine.
ii) It should be expressed in godly living.
iii) It should cause a person to be godly in every sense of the word.
b) “Having a form of godliness”
i) Unfortunately this is only a form.
ii) These may be church goers.
iii) They may participate in church activities.
iv) They may be involved in some ministries.
v) But these activities are only of superficial value.

2. “But denying its power”

a) The power of God is certainly absent.
b) These individuals do not seek the power of God.
c) They deny any need to seek God’s power.
d) There is no power-depth in any of the ministries they are engaged in.

3. A strong word of admonition

a) Timothy had been well advised.
b) He must take the appropriate action.
c) He must turn away from such people.
i) This was clear-cut.
ii) There is no loss when one turns away from such people.
d) It would be nothing short of foolishness to try and minister to people who are fixed in their ways.
e) Turning away from such people is a necessary act of wisdom.
