"Those who creep into households..."

Text: 2 Timothy 3:6

FURTHER WORD OF ADVICE

The apostle Paul went on to give a further word of advice to Timothy. The activities of these worldly-wise “believers” must also be noted!

“For of this sort are those who creep into households
and make captives of gullible women loaded down with
sins, led away by various lusts.”
2 Timothy 3:6

1. “For of this sort”

a) This phrase is best understood in the context of what Paul had written earlier (2 Timothy 3:2-5).
b) These are categorised as “of this sort”.

2. “Those who creep into households”

a) Paul described the movement of these people as “creeping”.
b) The idea is that of people doing things furtively.
i) They will seek to draw people away on the quiet.
ii) They will poach people from the church offering “an alternative”.

3. “And make captives”

a) Their desire is to have an audience.
b) Ultimately they make captives of the people that will listen to them.

4. Some of the people who could be drawn away

a) Gullible people
b) “Gullible women loaded down with sins” (in particular)
i) The untaught ones
ii) The less discerning ones
iii) The weaker ones
iv) The sinful ones
c) “Led away by various lusts”
i) What is the appeal?
ii) Paul suggested “various lusts”.
iii) Essentially “carnal desires”.
d) These dangers continue to be very real even today.
