THE PROBLEM OF TRUSTING OUR OWN UNDERSTANDING

One of the problems that people tend to struggle with is trusting in their own understanding. During the times of King Solomon, people had some basic knowledge of God. However, there was a poor application of that knowledge. People were caught up with their wrong ways. They were relying on their own understanding in life.

“And lean not on our own understanding”
Proverbs 3:5

People tended to formulate their own perceptions about life and how to go about living it. There was the issue of being wise in their own eyes (Proverbs 3:7). Why was this so?

1. It stems from a deeper issue of pride.

2. It is caused by wrong teaching and bad influence.

3. It comes about due to the sheer ignorance of the people.

Young people, let’s take heed concerning the danger of trusting in our own understanding.

THE CHALLENGE TO TRUST FULLY IN THE LORD

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all Your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6

The writer of Proverbs challenged his readers to practise trusting the Lord and His ways.

1. HAVING KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

A. HE IS OUR LORD

There must first be that knowledge of the Lord and His ways. Before we can trust Him fully, we need to know Him properly. He is our God who possesses and gives great wisdom, knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:5-6). He is a shield to those who walk uprightly. He preserves the way of His saints and protects them.

B. HE IS OUR LORD WHO CAN DIRECT OUR LIVES IN HIS PATHS (PROVERBS 3:6, 2:9)

He will direct our paths in the way we should go when we humbly seek Him. He will help us understand the paths of righteousness, justice, equity and every good path.

2. LEARNING TO TRUST GOD FULLY AS WE KNOW HIM

A. WHOLE-HEARTEDLY

Trusting the Lord half-heartedly means that we are still trusting in ourselves and our own understanding. Full trust in the Lord is about trusting with the whole heart the Lord and His ways.

B. WISDOM TO TRUST

We are prudent when we trust the Lord whole-heartedly. We will not lean on our own understanding but commit all things to the Lord in prayer.

Young people, let’s seek to be wise by entrusting our whole lives to Him. He will direct us in every good path. There is every reason to trust Him totally.
