Let Not Mercy and Truth Forsake You

PROVERBIAL SAYINGS

The book of Proverbs contains many “proverbial sayings.” What are they?

1. They are astute statements of wisdom ascertained through the observations of life.

2. They are also practical in nature.

3. They are to be seen as wise words of exhortations.

THE PRINCIPLE OF MERCY AND TRUTH

“Let not mercy and truth forsake you”
Proverbs 3:3

1. MERCY

Mercy is the kindness that is meant to be shown to people. It is seeking to be benevolent towards those in need.

2. TRUTH

The writer of Proverbs makes a call for all to seek after wisdom vigorously. It is through the obtaining of wisdom that truth is understood.

3. MERCY AND TRUTH GO TOGETHER

Mercy and the truth are meant to go very much together. When we understand words of wisdom and seek to keep them, it should be done in mercy and in truth. Mercy should be expressed at all times, being circumscribed by wisdom and understanding of truth.

THE PLACE OF MERCY AND TRUTH IN OUR HEARTS AND LIVES

“Let not mercy and truth forsake you;
Bind them around your neck,
Write them on the tablet of your heart,
And so find favor and high esteem
In the sight of God and man.”
Proverbs 3:3-4

1. SEEING THE IMPORTANT PLACE FOR MERCY AND TRUTH IN OUR LIVES

Why is it important to have mercy and truth in our hearts and lives? Firstly, it is wise to do so. There is the prospect of gaining approval from both God and men. We would be honored spiritually and socially. Secondly, we can also prevent ourselves from being merciless and even promoting falsehood when we forgo such wisdom. It is crucial to see how important mercy and truth are meant to be in our lives. We must make sure that they do not leave us.

2. PLACING MERCY AND TRUTH EVER BEFORE US

We are to constantly be reminded of mercy and truth in all that we do. They are to be placed in front of us so that we are conscious of them. They are meant to be “worn” at all times.

3. PLACING MERCY AND TRUTH DEEP IN OUR HEARTS

In ancient times, words were inscribed permanently on tablets of stone. Mercy and truth are meant to be inscribed on the tablets of our hearts. Mercy is meant to be constantly expressed in the application of truth. Young people, let’s ensure mercy and truth are placed deep in our hearts and they will affect all that we do in life.
