THE CHALLENGE TO KEEP PRAYING

Continue Earnestly In Prayer

Being consistent in our prayer life is not an easy thing to do. It is something that many of us often struggle with. Paul challenged the Colossian Church to practise consistency in their prayer life.

“Continue earnestly in prayer”
Colossians 4:2

The Colossians were meant to steadfastly continue in prayer for those in need. The phrase “continue earnestly” has an imperatival sense. It is not something where we have a choice. Our challenge is to keep prayer so much more a part of our lives. We must learn to discipline ourselves to be consistent. How do we go about doing this?

1. With A Spirit Of Vigilance

“Being vigilant in it”
Colossians 4:2

The word “vigilant” means to be watchful. Prayer should never be a moment where we pray and we soon forget about it. It should be a commitment of our prayer life where we intercede about something and we watch what happens. There must be a spirit of vigilance even as we pray. We must watch and wait on the Lord for the answer.

2. With A Spirit Of Thanksgiving

“With thanksgiving”
Colossians 4:2

At the same time, we must not forget to be thankful. Sometimes, we can be so caught up with the things of life as we seek answers to prayer that we forget to give thanks to God. Prayer should always be made with a spirit of thanksgiving. Even when things do not go our way, we should still give thanks to God.

Praying For Doors To Be Open For The Word

“Meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.”
Colossians 4:3-4

Paul exhorted the Colossians to also pray for him and his team that a door would be open for the word of God to be preached. Sometimes, doors can be closed with reference to mission work. Presently, we have not been able to go back to Myanmar to minister to our brethren. Let’s pray that a door would be opened for Pastor Charles to preach the word there. Let’s also pray that doors would be opened for us to speak the wonderful mysteries of Christ to our non-believing friends during our coming holidays. Let’s pray that the Junior camp coming up will be a time of reaching out to many children. Young people, we are counting on you for your prayer support. Let’s earnestly pray for opportunities to be opened to us to bear witness for the Lord.
