PRAYING FOR OUR BURMESE BRETHREN

Devastation In Yangon, Myanmar

The number of people reported dead and missing in Myanmar is staggering. The death toll is presently estimated at 23,000 people and the number of people missing is 40,000 people. Last Saturday, a Cat 3 cyclone called Nargis ripped through the Irrawaddy delta with 190 km/h winds. A twelve foot tall tidal wave swept through the southern coastal area, killing thousands in its path. Yangon is situated in the Irrawaddy delta. As you know, our seminary is situated in the former capital city. We do not have any news of how they are doing at the moment. Devastation has been widespread throughout the delta. What can we do for our Burmese Brethren? It is in difficult times like this that we must pray for them.

2 Corinthians 1:11

How can we go about praying for our Burmese brethren?

1. Believing That Prayer Really Helps

Paul saw how prayer had a definite role in bringing about actual help. He saw how the prayers of the Corinthian Church made a difference to him when he was going through great problems in Asia. He was “burdened beyond measure, above strength” and “despaired even of life” (2 Corinthians 1:8). The Corinthians’ prayers really aided him. He believed in the power of prayer. We too must believe that prayer really helps.

2. Being Involved In Prayer Together.

The phrase “helping together” means “joining in and helping”. There was a proactive approach concerning prayer in the Corinthian Church. They contributed to bringing help to Paul and his team through their pleadings to God. There was a deep sense of concern for Paul and his team. It makes a big difference when we all join in together to plead for someone in need.

Being Concerned Enough To Pray

Young people, let’s be concerned for the Burmese brethren in their time of need. Many of them may be hurting. Others may have lost loved ones. Our brethren in Myanmar need our prayer support. Let’s believe that our prayers can make a difference for them. Let’s pray for the following:

1. Fresh supply of food and water.
2. Preservation of life – Disease is another problem that can hit the people.
3. Comfort and strength for those who have lost loved ones
4. The Lord’s grace and mercies in their hour of need.

Let’s uphold our brethren in prayer until this calamity is passed.
