Let Your Heart Keep My Commands

WISE EXHORTATIONS

The book of Proverbs contains many wonderful words of wisdom that are crucial for life. Most of these wise exhortations were written by King Solomon who was considered one of the wisest men that lived during that time. There were standard ways by which these gems of wisdom were taught.

“My son”
Proverbs 3:1

1. From a teacher to a pupil.

2. From a father to a son.

3. From those who were considered as wise to others.

THE PRINCIPLE OF KEEPING WISE EXHORTATIONS

“My son, do not forget my law,
But let your heart keep my commands”
Proverbs 3:1

One of the principles taught to the readers was the keeping of these wise exhortations.

1. THE MIND INVOLVED IN REMEMBERING THESE WISE EXHORTATIONS.

Why is it important to remember them?

a. Because people can easily forget them.

b. Because they are to be regarded highly as law and commands and to be heeded.

c. Because there is great benefit in remembering and keeping them.

These words of exhortation and encouragement are meant to be properly understood by the mind. With understanding, we can see how they are truly worth remembering and thinking over.

2. THE HEART INVOLVED IN KEEPING THESE WISE EXHORTATIONS

The word “keep” has nuances of to heed and to hold fast to. These words of wisdom are meant to be heard and heeded with the heart. The heart must treasure these words and choose to be committed to observing them. We will keep them because it is wise to do so.

THE BLESSINGS OF THE LORD

“For length of days and long life
And peace they will add to you.”
Proverbs 3:2

1. ADDING QUANTITY OF DAYS – LONG LIFE

When we keep these wise words of exhortation, we would seek to follow the path of righteousness. And the Lord will bless us with long life. There will be quantity of days added to our lives.

2. ADDING QUALITY TO THE DAYS – PEACE

The Lord will also add to those who are prudent tremendous peace in life. There would be a sense of stillness and calmness in their lives as they seek to keep these words of wisdom.

Young people, let’s learn to keep wise words of exhortation from God’s word that we may live a life that is blessed by Him. Let’s pray that He will give us much peace as we walk with Him.
