Defending The Authenticity Of The Scriptures

In every generation, spiritual battles rage on. One of these battles involves attempts to discredit the authenticity of the Scriptures. The secular world has sought to discount the reliability of the Bible with books like “The Da Vinci Code”. Basically, they are just “cunningly devised fables” (2 Peter 1:16). In the days of Peter, false teachers used fables to deceive people and to turn them away from the truth. Peter vigorously refuted these false teachings by defending the authenticity of the Scriptures.

Believing In The Trustworthiness Of The Scriptures

“For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”
2 Peter 1:21

Peter defended Biblical prophecy, a genre of the Scriptures, as something that did not come by the will of men. The human will was never involved in the process of obtaining prophecies. Instead, God used holy human agents to proclaim and write His prophecies as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God was directly involved in supervising righteous men to write them. As such, we can believe that they are totally reliable.

Scriptures Not Meant For Private Interpretation

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation”
2 Peter 1:20

Furthermore, Scripture cannot be interpreted according to our whims and fancies. It has to be interpreted by Biblical principles of interpretation. When people do not know these principles, they end up with wrong interpretations. If we want to defend the Scriptures, we too must know that Scriptures is not meant for private interpretations. There is a definite system by which we can interpret Bible verses. Let’s seek to know this system.

Finding Certainty In The Scriptures

“And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts”
2 Peter 1:19

Let’s have a great sense of certainty as we defend the Scriptures. When we take heed of the word of God, it is like the day that comes upon a land that is in darkness. Dawn will give way to fullness of light when the sun comes up. Even so, let’s seek to be fully convinced of God’s truths bit by bit. This month at our YPG, we are going to learn how to make a solid defence for the Scriptures. Let’s seek to have further assurance about the Scriptures. When we defend it, may we do so with great certainty.
