The crossroads of life

In life, we have to make choices time and time again. But there are times when we find ourselves at the crossroads of life that whatever we decide on, it is going to change the course of our life in more ways than one.

At those significant moments of life, how can we learn to be sure that we make the right choices for our life? It is crucial that we have some guiding principles as to how we may make those choices.

These are some principles that I have sought to apply for my own crossroads of life over the years which have proven to be wise.

Principles of making choices

1. The word of God

The Lord’s word is key in helping us make good choices. Any choice that we make should be in line with the Scriptures and should not be in any way against it. Let us seek the Lord’s word as a lamp to our feet and light to our path. (Psalm 119:105)

2. Wisdom

Applying wisdom is also crucial. There are times when we have to make choices between two good things. This is when wisdom is necessary to help discern which is better. A man who seeks and has understanding from wisdom would have wise counsel. (Prov 1:5)

3. Prayer

Prayer is absolutely crucial in making good decisions. David sought the Lord in prayer to lead and guide him…to show him the way that he should go. (Ps 25:4,5)

For example, he inquired of the Lord concerning the choice as to whether he should go and rescue Keilah or not. (1 Sam 23:12) The Lord answered in the affirmative. Let us pray over each matter that we have to decide on.

4. Counselling

There is the need for counselling that can help us make our choices especially through those who are godly, “Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.” (Prov 15:22) Let us learn to establish good plans and choices through the help of counsellors such as our pastors.

5. The will of God

Ultimately, our choices would be dependent on our understanding of the will of God. For Paul, he could only make the choice to go to Rome only if the will of God allowed for it. (Romans 15:32) Let us trust in the will of God to make our choices.

Making good choices

As we seek to apply these principles in the making of our choices, let us seek the Lord’s leading and guidance. Let us pray that He would give us the wisdom to make good choices in life so that we may be able to follow His will for us.
