Extolling our great God
When we consider all that God has blessed us with, our response ought to be to extol Him. It should be the most natural thing to do. God is truly deserving of our utmost praise and honour. As David personally experienced the Lord’s many blessings, he extolled Him by raising rhetorical questions: “For who is God, except the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?” (Psalm 18:31) The answer is obvious: there is no one like the Lord. Despite life’s challenges, David was able to extol Him with great delight and maintain a strong focus on Him. What reasons did David have for extolling the Lord? He had both past and present reasons to extol the Lord.
Reasons for extolling the Lord…His blessings
1. Past reasons
a. Shield of salvation
“You have also given me the shield of Your salvation;” (Psalm 18:35)
The Lord provided David with protection as a shield and delivered him numerous times.
b. Upholding
“Your right hand has held me up,” (Psalm 18:35)
David recognised that he could not carry himself. He depended on and experienced God’s right hand upholding him. It was with great strength that God upheld him.
c. Gentleness
“Your gentleness has made me great.” (Psalm 18:35)
David was not free from sin, and he acknowledged that God had showed him much grace, mercy, and lovingkindness. This was the “gentleness” of God being shown to him so that he could become spiritually greater.
2. Present reasons
a. Strength
“It is God who arms me with strength,” (Psalm 18:32)
David’s strength came from God. God armed him with inner strength to fight his enemies. He relied on the Lord’s grace and mercy.
b. Make our way perfect
“And makes my way perfect.” (Psalm 18:32)
When David consulted the Lord, He answered David by revealing His way. David saw clear evidence of God’s perfect ways.
c. Surefooted
“He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places.” (Psalm 18:33)
A deer’s feet can climb with steadiness and certainty. In the same way, God enabled David to be sure-footed and steady, enabling him to overcome his challenges.
A deeper appreciation of the significance of the Lord’s blessings
As we consider the blessings God gave David, what should we appreciate? These blessings reflected God’s love for David. There was a close relationship between them. God gave these blessings in response to the prayers David offered to Him. He extended His blessings to David out of His grace and mercy. The Lord was well pleased to bless David. Wonderfully, we can be assured that God’s promise and word concerning His blessings are true…all proven to be good. Let us be challenged to extol the Lord, for He is worthy. As we consider the many reasons to extol the Lord, let us be inspired to give Him the highest praise. Let us deeply appreciate and love our great God for giving us His manifold blessings.
