Facing an overwhelming situation

At times, we face circumstances that seem overwhelming…too difficult to overcome and deeply distressing. David experienced such hardships as he dealt with his enemies. What was David up against? He knew his enemies and how strong they were (Psalm 18:17). Enemies such as Saul and the Philistines were hostile and relentless. They were not easily defeated. David acknowledged, “For they were too strong for me” (Psalm 18:17). On one occasion, King Saul pursued David and his 600 men with 3,000 soldiers (1 Samuel 24:2), and the odds appeared firmly stacked against David. Yet, David did not despair amid the extremely difficult situation. He exercised faith and sought the Lord’s deliverance.

The deliverance of the Lord

  1. God sent deliverance from above (Psalm 18:16)
    1. David experienced divine deliverance from heaven.
    2. This deliverance could only come from the Lord.
  2. He took David (Psalm 18:16)
    1. God demonstrated great power by taking David out of dire circumstances.
    2. No one could withstand the power of God.
  3. He drew him out of many waters (Psalm 18:16)
    1. David was in “deep waters”…many times.
    2. He was unable to help himself.
    3. But God would intervene and draw him out.
  4. He delivered David (Psalm 18:17)
    1. David’s enemies were strong…in fact, too strong for him to deal with.
    2. But he was totally reliant on God.
    3. God helped deliver him from his strong enemies.

Reasons for the Lord’s deliverance

1. The Lord was David’s support

“But the Lord was my support. He also brought me out into a broad place;” (Psalm 18:18–19)

  1. The enemies confronted David with overwhelming force.
  2. But God was his support.
  3. God’s support was greater than the vast forces of the enemies.
  4. He supported David through those calamitous times.
  5. Through God’s support, power and protection, David was delivered.
  6. God helped David escape and brought him out into a broad place.
  7. David found safety and security.

2. The Lord delighted in David

“He delivered me because He delighted in me.” (Psalm 18:19)

God appreciated David’s love for Him. They shared a close relationship. David’s understanding and knowledge of God had grown and deepened. His faith in God led him to keep seeking God in times of difficulty. God delighted in David and delivered him accordingly.

Let us be challenged to deepen our understanding of God as our Deliverer. Let us seek to draw closer to Him and strengthen our faith. In times of distress, let us be challenged to seek the Lord for His support and deliverance.
