Cultivating a love for wisdom

Many have a love for the various things in this world. They do everything they can to seek these things out of love. But what about a love for God’s wisdom? Many lack this and as a result, they cannot find the wisdom they need in life. The challenge is to cultivate a deeper love for wisdom.

The author of Proverbs helps us appreciate the value of a greater love for wisdom. When we have a love for wisdom, we choose to seek it diligently. “And those who seek me diligently will find me.” (Proverbs 8:17) We do everything possible to search for it. In return, wisdom will show us her love, “I love those who love me.” (Proverbs 8:17) We can find the wisdom we need in life and ministry.

The ways of wisdom

“I traverse the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of justice,” (Proverbs 8:20)

  1. Wisdom will always walk along specific ways.
  2. Solomon highlights two paths.
    1. The way of righteousness
      • Wisdom will always follow a lifestyle that is righteous.
      • She will avoid any path that is evil or unrighteous.
    2. The path of justice
      • Wisdom will also choose the way that will uphold the law and justice.
      • She will not do anything unjust or wrong.

The blessings of wisdom

1. Riches

“Riches and honour are with me, enduring riches and righteousness.” (Proverbs 8:18)

  1. One blessing of wisdom is riches.
  2. Wisdom would help us to labour well and prosper in our work.
  3. We would have the wisdom to attain wealth and riches.
  4. This is true if we were to love wisdom…“That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, that I may fill their treasuries.” (Proverbs 8:21)
  5. There would come a greater inheritance and wealth.

2. Honour

  1. Wisdom would also bless us with honour.
  2. Leaders with wisdom would guide the nation well.
  3. They would be specially honoured for their leadership and vision.
  4. With wisdom, there will be honour in what we do in life and ministry.

3. The fruit of wisdom (Proverbs 8:19)

“My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, and my revenue than choice silver.”

Wisdom bears much fruit. What is the value of her fruit? The worth of her fruit is greater than gold and choice silver. If we possess such fruit, we ought to consider ourselves greatly blessed.

We have every reason to walk the path of righteousness and justice with wisdom. Let us be challenged to cultivate a deeper love for wisdom so that she may love us and bless us richly in return.
